Meet Shannon Princess Captain, Helen De Cent

New Zealand-born, Helen has had ample experience navigating Europe’s waterways. Starting her hotel barging journey on the waterways of France, she worked her way up the ranks to Captain to take the helm on the Spirit of Scotland for many years. Now, Helen takes centre stage as Captain of the Shannon Princess, traversing the picturesque River Shannon on the Emerald Isle…

How long have you worked for EW?

I believe it has been since 2008, with a few breaks in between!

Is it how you expected it to be?

Not at all, and I did not expect to still be in the industry all these years later, but it is still fun and I am always learning new things.

What was your very first job?

I worked in a seafood restaurant near the beach in Nelson, New Zealand.

How did you get started in this line of work?

I have worked in tourism in London, the Middle East, and then the French Alps where I ran a mountain bike chalet. After some time, a friend recommended I look into hotel barging, which I did – and took a job as a chef. It was at this point I spotted European Waterways’ hotel barge Renaissance… and well, the rest is history!

What are you most proud of about working for EW?

Being a female leader in a mostly male-oriented industry. It’s heart-warming seeing people (especially young girls) taking inspiration from a role such as mine. It’s incredibly empowering knowing that my actions may make a difference, especially when they ask me questions like “are you really driving that?!”

Ultimately, I love making trips of a life time for people – and to offer a slice of hotel barging life is a privilege!

5 daily tasks / duties?

  1. Wiping down the boat first time in the morning
  2. Servicing the generators
  3. Presenting the barge to new clients
  4. Making coffee for the early birds and having a lovely chat with people one-to-one
  5. Talking to guests about the differences between whisky and whiskey!

Favourite region to cruise in?

The Canal du Midi

What makes your barge unique?

The living space inside and out, and the large windows that allow you to enjoy the view even in bad weather

Do you look after the barge in the winter?

I took care of the Spirit of Scotland during the winter, which was a challenge being in the Scottish Highlands due to the interchangeable weather! I’m not sure what I’ll do now that I’m in Ireland, as my home is still in Scotland – but she will be well taken care of, I’m sure of that.

Outside of the season, do you live on a boat?

While working on the barge we do live onboard, and I did stay aboard the Spirit of Scotland for much of the winter season. However, being away from home for long periods of time can take its toll so I very much enjoy going home to see my partner and our dog, Deedee.

Where did you grow up?

Nelson on New Zealand’s South Island

Do you miss any home comforts?

My dog Deedee, and taking long showers

How do you spend your time when you’re not working?

I love travelling and going on camping adventures in my campervan!

What would you do if you weren't a barge Captain?

Who knows, maybe a long distance truck driver or a National Park Ranger. I believe you can be whatever you want to be. Who knew back in 2008 when I started with European Waterways as a Hostess that I would be a Barge Captain years later!
