Fantastic Film Locations to See on a Scottish Cruise

Scotland is known for its distinct and uniquely beautiful landscape. From looming mountains and dipping valleys to fog-filled lochs and deep green land as far as the eye can see, it’s no surprise the country’s dramatic scenery has become a much-utilised backdrop for films. Here are two of our top cinematic destinations, which we visit on many of our luxury Scottish cruises.

Glencoe

Glencoe, with its mountainous and wild terrain and awe-inspiring views, is one of the most beautiful areas in Scotland. Its past has been filled with sorrow (such as the Glencoe Massacre) and myth (it is said the legendary Celtic hero Fingal lived in its mountains). In recent years, however, it is perhaps most well-known as the location of films and television shows such as Skyfall, Outlander and Harry Potter.

  • The background of the covered bridge, Hagrid’s hut and the pumpkin patch from various Harry Potter movies.
  • The valley from the iconic scene in Skyfall where, as James Bond and M escape to the Highlands, Bond stands by his classic car and gazes out over the landscape.

Eilean Donan Castle

This thirteenth-century castle, set in the Scottish Highlands, has seen everything from clan feuding and sieges to Jacobite uprisings. Destroyed in 1719, it was rebuilt in the early twentieth century to accurately resemble how it would have looked 500 years ago. Since its restoration, it has become a popular location for films and can be seen in the likes of Highlander and The World is Not Enough.
