Video: Urquhart Castle

Urquhart Castle Scotland is a Loch Ness Castle in the Highlands of Scotland. The Magnificently Situated Urquhart Castle overlooking Loch Ness. A Clan Grant stronghold, Urquhart Castle stands with commanding presence guarding the Great Glen.

The castle was begun in the 13th century, and because of its strategic position, it has a complex history of military offense and defence, as well as its own destruction and renovation. It was fought over by Robert the Bruce of Scotland and Edward I of England during the Wars of Independence in the 13th century and was ruined when its own garrison blew it up to prevent it from falling into Jacobite hands during the unrest that followed the Restoration of the Monarchy at the end of the 17th century.

The ruins of what was one of the largest castles in Scotland were plundered for building material. The backdrop of the castle silhouetted against the loch and the hills beyond is stunning. The centre contains displays of the castle and military and domestic artifacts from the time of the castle’s inhabitation.
