What is a Hotel Barge Cruise?
A hotel barge trip offers slow, stress-free travel where guests savour the countryside, local traditions, gourmet food and wine at an unhurried pace. Days blend relaxing onboard with gentle walks or cycling along towpaths, guided excursions and visits to artisan producers. The barge cruises only by day and moors each night in peaceful settings, creating a calm, immersive experience from pickup to drop-off.
What’s Included in the Price of a Hotel Barge Cruise?
Six nights on board (Sunday to Saturday) in air-conditioned, en-suite accommodation. All transfers are provided by the crew in comfortable, air-conditioned minibuses, along with a daily excursion programme as advertised, hosted by the Tour Guide and inclusive of all entry fees.
You will also enjoy the services of our experienced Captain, Chef, Tour Guide, Host/Hostess and Deckhand. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on board. All lunches and evening meals are a gastronomic adventure, featuring local produce delicately prepared by your private chef.
Once during the week, guests on most hotel barges will enjoy a local lunch or dinner ashore. The cruise also includes an excellent selection of fine regional and international wines, branded spirits from the open bar, soft drinks, coffee and a selection of teas.
You will have use of the barge facilities, including bicycles, boules, the barge library, complimentary Wi-Fi and a spa pool.

When Is the Best Time to Cruise?
Each month in Europe offers something different. In April, you can experience tulip season in Holland, May brings birdsong and blooming countryside, June offers long days in the Scottish Highlands without the peak summer crowds, while July features Value Season pricing.
In August, the harvest season comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere. September sees cooler temperatures and stunning autumn colours, while October offers misty mornings and evenings paired with rich fall hues.

Do You Offer Christmas Cruises?
Yes, you can experience some of the world’s most popular Christmas markets in November and December. You will visit Colmar, Strasbourg and Riquewihr Christmas Markets.

Do Hotel Barges Still Look Like They Did Historically?
Although some of our beautiful hotel barges have fascinating histories, such as L’Art de Vivre, which carried ammunition during the First World War, we continually renovate and upgrade our barges to suit the modern traveller, ensuring every vessel offers exceptional comfort.
What Is the Difference Between the Categories of Hotel Barges?
Our hotel barges fall into three categories: First Class, Deluxe and Ultra Deluxe. It is primarily differentiated by cabin size:
- First Class cabins are compact and cosy.
- Deluxe cabins are more spacious and offer added comfort.
- Ultra Deluxe barges feature very spacious cabins comparable to luxury hotels.
Regardless of category, the service, wines, gourmet meals, excursions and onboard amenities remain the same.
Do All Cabins Have Private Bathrooms?
Yes, every cabin features a private en-suite bathroom with a shower, toilet, basin, and thoughtfully selected luxury amenities.

What Is the Attire on Board?
The dress attire is casual but comfortable. On the last night, there is a Captains’ dinner where you can dress smarter if you would like, however it is not a black tie event. During the excursions you will also be walking around so comfortable shoes are a must as well as non-slip shoes for the deck.
Do We Need to Book the Whole Barge, or Can We Book a Cabin?
Guests may choose to book either an individual cabin or a private charter. Cabin bookings allow you to cruise with like-minded guests from around the world, enjoying luxury service, fine dining, exquisite wines and engaging conversations. Many guests return to cruise again with friends they met on previous journeys, exploring new regions together.

Do Solo Travellers Have to Pay a Two-Person Rate?
Solo travellers are very welcome on board. The atmosphere often feels like a “floating house party,” with communal, convivial meals and group excursions ensuring everyone feels included. No you will not be paying a two-person rate. A Single Supplement applies, which is discounted from the full cabin price. We do also sometimes have No Single Supplement special offers which you can also take advantage of.
Are Hotel Barge Cruises Suitable for Families?
A barge cruise is a wonderful way for families to explore regions while moving to a new destination each day, all while enjoying privacy, flexibility and fun on board. There’s no need to worry about meals, as the onboard chef is flexible and happy to accommodate family preferences and needs. You are also able to substitute certain activities where we can change an excursion for a visit to the zoo or canoeing or other family-friendly activities in the area.

What Themed Cruises Are Available?
We offer a range of themed itineraries for private charters, including:

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
Each day offers a balance of relaxation and exploration. Typically, you’ll either cruise in the morning with an excursion in the afternoon or enjoy an excursion first and cruise later in the day. Every day brings something new.
Do You Cater for Dietary Requirements?
Absolutely. Our on-board chefs are experienced professionals and are happy to accommodate dietary requirements and preferences. All details are shared with the captain and chef well in advance so menus can be carefully planned.

What Is the Difference Between Value Season and Regular Season Pricing?
There is no difference in the cruising experience itself – it is purely the time of year.
Value Season runs from mid/end March to mid-April, mid-July to mid-August, and the end of October. Regular Season applies to all other cruising dates.
How Many Crew Are On Board?
Our crew are English-speaking and mainly hail from the United Kingdom or France. With a minimum 2:1 passenger-to-crew ratio, you can expect highly personalised service and exceptional attention to detail.

How Do We Get to the Hotel Barge?
For cabin bookings, we provide a central pick-up and drop-off location in the nearest getaway city. We’ll collect you from this location and transfer you to the barge, then return you there at the end of the cruise. For private charters, transfers can be arranged flexibly from a single location of the group’s choice.

What Experiences Are Included on Your Cruise?
You’ll visit famous vineyards with private tastings, UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Reims Cathedral and enjoy exclusive experiences like dining with a Baroness.
