You will find answers to our frequently asked questions for cruising solo below and more…
Solo Travelling is on the Rise
Across the world, more people are choosing to travel independently — not because they have to, but because they want to. Solo travel offers a wonderful sense of freedom. You can follow your own interests, take time to reflect, embrace new experiences and connect with people you might never otherwise meet. For many, it is both empowering and deeply rewarding.
On our European Waterways cruises, solo travellers bring a lively and engaging dynamic to the mix of international guests onboard. Conversations flow easily over gourmet meals, and friendships are formed while exploring castles, châteaux, local markets and wineries. With usually just six to 12 guests on board our floating boutique hotels, the atmosphere is intimate and inclusive — ideal for those travelling alone.
Onboard Exploration
Our guided daily excursions are another highlight. Exploring hidden villages, historic landmarks and renowned attractions as a small group adds a sense of ease and reassurance, particularly for first-time solo cruisers. At the same time, there is always space on board to retreat with a book on deck or enjoy a quiet moment taking in the scenery. It is this thoughtful balance of sociability and privacy that makes solo cruising so appealing.
There are plenty of destinations to choose from. In France you may opt for Burgundy, celebrated for its vineyards and gastronomy, or the sun-drenched Canal du Midi, which winds past medieval towns rich in history. Alternatively, perhaps a cruise along the Caledonian Canal through the lochs of the Scottish Highlands appeals, or an Italian voyage through the Po Valley between Venice and Mantua. Each destination offers its own character, cuisine and cultural treasures to discover.
Singles aren’t Singled Out
There is no ‘singles table’ and no sense of being set apart. Every guest dines together, creating a convivial house-party atmosphere. Many solo travellers tell us that the camaraderie, shared laughter and fascinating conversations become one of the most memorable aspects of their cruise.
We do not offer ‘singles only’ cruises. Instead, solo travellers join couples and fellow independent guests, enjoying the full hotel barging experience in relaxed and welcoming company.
The Unique Benefits of Travelling Solo
Freedom to focus on what inspires you
Travelling solo allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experiences that matter most to you. Whether that is photography, history, cuisine or simply soaking up the landscape, there is a special pleasure in knowing the journey is entirely your own.
Meaningful connections
When travelling independently, you may find you are more open to conversation and connection. On a small barge, it is easy to get to know your fellow guests and crew in an authentic way. Shared experiences — from wine tastings to market visits — naturally spark conversation and often lead to lasting friendships.
Confidence and independence
Many solo travellers describe a sense of confidence that grows with each journey. Exploring new destinations on your own, while knowing that every detail has been thoughtfully arranged for you, is both reassuring and empowering.
The luxury of personal space
One of the great joys of solo travel is the ability to enjoy company when you wish, and privacy when you prefer quiet time. Your own cabin becomes a peaceful retreat, and there is never any pressure to participate beyond your comfort level.
Solo Traveller Supplement
We regularly feature selected departures with no single supplement, offering excellent value for solo travellers. These can be found in our Solo Offers within our Special Offers, and are well worth exploring if you are looking to enjoy your own cabin without any additional charge.
On other cruises, a single supplement does apply. This is simply because our cabins are designed and priced for two guests sharing. When one person occupies the cabin, the supplement, which is usually about 35% of the cruise fare helps to cover the fixed costs associated with that space, from accommodation and amenities to onboard services. You benefit from the same spacious surroundings, attentive service, gourmet dining and inclusive excursions, all with the added comfort of having your own private sanctuary.
If you are travelling alone or perhaps cruising with friends or family but prefer the comfort and privacy of your own cabin, the supplement ensures you can enjoy a spacious cabin created for two, at a price still lower than the combined fare for a couple.
