Meet Anjodi Captain, Laurent Charbonnier
How long have you worked for EW?
I started in April 2006
Is it how you expected it to be?
It was something totally new for me, but loved it right away!
Tell us about your love of the waterways
It’s very peaceful – I feel privileged to see the scenery from a boat. I’ve always liked boats and have spent lots of time at sea on ocean cruises
What was your very first job?
My first every job was as a waiter in a restaurant
What inspired you to become a barge Captain?
I believe it was natural evolution in the industry that I was in. I actually started as a host, then a tour guide/ deckhand and then Derek (Founder and Managing Director of European Waterways) encouraged me to take the leap and go for my very own boat license!
What are you most proud of about working for EW?
The trust the company place in me to run one of their very own vessels
What are your favourite daily duties?
Getting the bread in the morning, cleaning and getting the boat ready, driving the boat, fixing small repair, interacting with the guests – there’s so many to choose from!
What makes your barge unique?
We do everything in our power to ensure it runs perfectly on time like a Swiss watch
Favourite region to cruise in?
My absolute favourite is the Canal du Midi, followed by the Canal du Nivernais
What feature do guests always love?
The barge’s shape and luxemotor that dates back to 1929
Most memorable experience on board?
In my first year, I refused entry to a stranger trying to come on board. I quickly found out that the stranger was the Founder and Managing Director!
First thing you do when you climb aboard?
I give the boat a quick kiss hello!
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the Loire Valley, in a town called Angers
Do you miss any home comforts?
My family, and space to stretch out and relax
Post-season pleasures?
Taking care of my kids, and renovating my house
What would you do if you weren't a barge Captain?
I’d most definitely still work in hospitality – it’s something I’m very passionate about
